Miracle on Jones Street
By Jenny Peters

Every day, the Jones Street Shelter gives help and hope to people however it can, be it through a warm meal or a bed for the night. On Christmas Day, it also brought something else to many who were there: joy.

A special party sponsored by the United Way and the Port Alexander Dutchmen was held Christmas morning at the shelter, with hundreds attending at various points throughout the day. No expense was spared for the party, which featured a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings for any and all who would come, as well as music and merriment to be had by all.

Many notable people in Port Alexander attended the event, not the least of which were Sting and the Wanderer, representing the superhero team the Protectors. Mayor-Elect Rick Adams attended with Police Commissioner Roger Williams. Although Dutchmen owner Alexander Crosby was unable to attend due to sudden illness, his daughter Lorelei Crosby attended on his behalf.

"We don't see this as a cure for the problems that this shelter tries to salve every day. What this is is, very simply, a day for all people to enjoy the fun, the magic, and the hope that Christmas Day is supposed to represent. The Dutchmen remain committed to our original goals behind funding this shelter and its programs, but today is about giving our family...all of you...a day to enjoy, to remember, and to reflect on what Christmas means to each and every one of you," Lorelei said in a brief speech to kickoff the event.

Event Highlights
About an hour after the event started there was a loud noise on the roof of the shelter. After a few seconds, we were astonished to see through the window none other than Santa Claus himself. He arrived to begin handing out the mountainous number of presents there for the children who were attending, many of whom were brought specifically to the shelter to receive their gift. In addition to each child getting a toy, they were also given a winter coat provided through the shelter to help them get through the winter.
The funniest moment of the day came when Santa (who bore a striking resemblence to Flex, a recent heroic newcomer to Port Alexander) called for his elf...and out walked Sting, at half-size, in a green elf suit. He took his place next to Santa, telling the crowd. "If any one asks me for some Chips Deluxe cookies, they're gonna get it!"
